Johnny must have recorded this album before he met Jessica Simpson, because he sounds, well... musical, deftly combining his well-known softer side with his love of grittier blues-based material. Okay, Jess might've penned the line "Gravity wants to bring me down," but Mayer's lyrics are usually stronger than that. He pushes his falsetto delivery into sugary "Wonderland" territory at times, but his seasoned band plays with the right amount of bite, and John's tasty, soulful guitar playing makes him heir to Eric Clapton's "Slowhand" throne.
