1978's The Deer Hunter tells the story of a group of steel workers' infantry service in the Vietnam War. Meryl played Linda, a pensive young woman who recently moved out of her abusive father's home. This was Meryl's first major role, and it scored her Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actress.
