It's tape night. It hasn't really hit me that we're actually filming my script until I walk onto the set and see the cast and extras in full '70s hair and wardrobe in front of a live audience. When a few of the cast members flub their lines, the audience cracks up. It's amazing to see how the cast feeds off of the high-energy audience ‑- it really makes for a great filming!
At the end of the night, the cast takes a bow and the announcer calls out, "Tonight's episode was written by Sarah McLaughlin." I run out in front of 200 people, and they give me a standing ovation. Afterward, the cast signs autographs for the audience and some people shout for me to sign their scripts.
As I'm proudly signing away, they tell me how much they love my music and ask if I have any CDs with me. Great, they think I'm Sarah McLachlan, the singer. Yes, I'm both a Canadian pop star and a prime-time sitcom writer. Wait, didn't Sarah McLachlan win a Grammy? I wonder if she knows Vera Wang...
That '70s Show airs Wednesday nights at 8pm on Fox. Sarah McLaughlin's episode, "Surprise, Surprise," aired in early December.
