The breaks: Now one of Hollywood's highest-paid stars (he nabbed $25 million for the 2003 comedy Bruce Almighty), Jim had his share of hard knocks as a kid -- growing up in the Toronto area, the youngest of four siblings, the family was at one point reduced to living in a van. In his late teens, Jim put his talent to work, trying his hand at local stand-up and then in L.A. The early days were bumpy -- until the Wayans brothers recruited Jim for their TV sketch comedy show In Living Color, giving the young comic a launching pad to big-time gigs. Since the mid-'90s it's been pretty smooth sailing, thanks to mega-hits like Ace Ventura Pet Detective, The Mask and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, all which showcase his goofy gift and endless energy for physical comedy. His dramatic forays, though earnest, have had spotty success: The Truman Show was a hit, but the more sentimental The Majestic was a dud. And the Academy Awards snub him every time -- though with nine MTV Movie Awards, he's that event's biggest-ever winner.

Sidekick: During his stand-up days he met and married waitress Melissa Womer. But after eight years and a daughter, Jane, the two split in 1995; the following year, Jim married actress and Dumb and Dumber costar Lauren Holly, but that match lasted only 12 months. A romance with Me, Myself, and Irene costar Renée Zellweger was hot, but didn't lead the pair to the altar. Jim's now swinging single.
