You can count on P.S. star Laura Linney to get a Best Actress nod.
Big Hollywood roles for women were hard to come by this year. Most of the actresses considered top contenders are from small independent films ‑- the smaller the film, the more likely the nominee. Similarly, the less American the film, the more likely the nominee. Would big mainstream stars like Julia Roberts and Tea Leoni only make the list to add some celebrity wattage, or do they deserve to be there?
The likeliest five: Laura Linney (P.S.), Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace), Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake), Audrey Tatou (A Very Long Engagement), Zhang Ziyi (House of Flying Daggers)
Other top contenders: Kim Basinger (The Door in the Floor), Annette Bening (Being Julia), Tea Leoni (Spanglish), Julia Roberts (Closer), Kate Winslet (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
Last year's winner: Charlize Theron (Monster)

This was an intense, scary film. I can't imagine that anyone is willing to risk their lives to smuggle these drugs.

Anyone who does a great job in a role deserves to be considered, obviously, whether they're a big star or a nobody.

I saw the film before the oscars. I agree with your article completely. I think that, what is wonderfull about Catalina -besides her natural beauty- is her fresh and clean attitude. Her power remains in her talent and her absolutely unpretentious way of being. Besides that the film is very realistic, made with honesty and without miserabilistic or stereotypes. The real questions that the film stand are toching the real ethic of the drugs consumsion. Besides any druf transaction, no matter how small itcould be, ther is a chain of misery, suffering, lack of humanity or honesty. The fault is not only necessary on the side of the producer or "mule", who does it pushed sometimes by need or difficult circumstances. The consumer even if it is for momentaneous pleasure or occasionally, is helping to build a desastrous industry of corruption and fear, misery and responsable for situations like the one Maria faces on the film
