BewitchedStars: Nicole Kidman, Will Ferrell, Shirley MacLaine, Steve Carell Even with a stellar cast, the female critics found the big-screen makeover of TV classic Bewitched, in which Kidman's character plays a real witch who lands the role of nose-twitching Samantha on a TV remake of the show, to be less than magical. The Philadelphia Inquirer's Carrie Rickey says of Kidman, "One thing she is not is a clown. She thinks fizzy and dizzy and klutzy are funny. She is mistaken." USA Today's Claudia Puig says "the movie's concept is forced and clunky," Kidman is "sweet, ditzy and boring" and the script "isn't very funny, either." The New York Times's Manohla Dargis says the "film's screenwriters conjured up a very clever gimmick when they decided to revamp a favorite '60s television show. Too bad they forgot that a gimmick is no substitute for a screenplay, never mind a real movie," and the Los Angeles Times's Carina Chocano says the movie "isn't a remake, really. It's a 'reimagining,' which is a sparkly word for what happens to a beloved TV hit of yesteryear when it's cannibalized by committee." Female consensus: Great talent and a great idea mean nothing if the talent's miscast and the idea's badly executed
