The Wire
Set in Baltimore, this realistic cop drama isn't as predictable as CSI or Law & Order, where the crimes are solved by the end of the episode. Though the show is male dominated (Dominic West shines as detective Jimmy McNulty), the female characters are surprising not the stereotypical females we normally see on crime shows.
A Very Married Christmas
Frank Griffin (Joe Mantegna) is oblivious. He lives in a world where the white picket fence surrounding his tidy suburban colonial protects him from having to deal with reality. He's got a wife and daughter and a job he likes, and everything is in its place. Then his wife (Jean Smart) goes and announces that she's unhappy.
