When Arthur Golden's novel about a young girl who becomes Japan's most famous geisha turned into an acclaimed international best-seller, creating a movie version became a priority. Even so, the project took five years to complete. First Steven Spielberg was called to direct, but he abandoned the project for Minority Report. Instead he produced it and Rob Marshall, who successfully brought Chicago to the big screen, eventually signed on to direct the lavish feature.
