Red Lights to Red Carpet

Ross's Brood

Once she decided to do a film, Briski sought help from her ex-boyfriend Ross Kauffman, a filmmaker. He was reluctant, to say the least. "I said no," he remembers. "I knew it would be three or four years of our lives, and I wasn't ready for that." Briski, being persistent, went out and bought two tiny digital video cameras and told him that she was going to start shooting. She went back to India and sent him a sample of her work. "I loved the footage," he says. "Three weeks later, I was in Calcutta."
